What is Woven Label?

A woven label is a small textile label produced on a Jacquard weaving machine, in which the brand name, logo, size designation, or decorative design is created by interlacing warp and weft yarns rather than being printed onto a base fabric. The result is a label where the design is an integral part of the fabric structure,it cannot be washed, scratched, or rubbed off like a printed label.

How Woven Labels Are Made

Woven labels are produced on narrow-width Jacquard looms programmed with a digital design file. The Jacquard mechanism controls individual warp threads, raising and lowering them independently to create complex multi-colour patterns. Common thread materials are:

  • Polyester yarn: The most common; excellent colour range, durability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Rayon/viscose yarn: Softer hand feel, subtle sheen, preferred for premium and lingerie labels
  • Cotton yarn: Natural feel, suitable for organic/sustainable brand positioning
  • Metallic yarn: For luxury or premium labels requiring gold or silver elements

Types of Woven Labels

  • Flat woven label: The standard type; threads lie flat, producing a smooth-faced label with raised design
  • Damask label: Very fine weave with high thread count, producing superior detail and a smooth feel, used for premium and luxury brands
  • Satin/taffeta label: A base woven with a satin finish that is then printed, technically a hybrid of woven and printed
  • 3D/high-density label: Extra weft threads create a raised, embossed effect on specific design areas

Common Label Configurations

  • Neck labels / main labels: Brand name and logo, sewn at the neck seam
  • Size labels: Size designation, sewn alongside or combined with main label
  • End fold / loop fold / centre fold: Different folding styles determine how the label sits in the garment

Durability: Well-woven polyester labels remain legible and intact through hundreds of wash cycles, far outlasting printed or heat-transfer alternatives. This durability makes woven labels the standard for quality garments across all price points.

Label fold types: Center fold (most common, collar), end fold (neat finish, prevents fraying), loop fold (hem tags), Manhattan fold (center + end fold, softest, almost exclusively for hem tags).

Key investment rule: The difference between a $0.03 and a $0.10 label is often the difference between scratchy and premium feel. Invest the extra $0.07 per label,it reinforces brand positioning every time the customer wears the garment.

Country of origin compliance: All garments exported to EU, USA, UK, and Japan must bear origin labels ("Made in India" etc.),this can be woven into main label or added separately.

FAQ · 08

Frequently asked.

A woven label has its design integrated into the fabric structure through yarn interlacing on a Jacquard loom, permanent and wash-resistant through hundreds of cycles. A printed label applies ink onto a base fabric substrate (usually polyester satin). Woven labels cost $0.036–$0.18 (₹3–₹16) vs. printed at $0.012–$0.06 (₹1–₹5). Printed labels can reproduce fine gradients but may fade/crack over time. 80%+ of designer brands use woven labels for main brand identity. The $2.44 billion (₹222.3 billion) label market strongly favors woven at 42%+ share.

Standard lead time from design approval to delivery: India (Surat/Tirupur),10–21 days (sample weave 5–7 days + bulk). China (Guangdong),10–21 days, sometimes faster for simple designs. USA (Liberty Labels),7–14 days (domestic advantage). EU,14–21 days. Expedited production possible in 7–10 days at a premium. Always allow 3–4 weeks in production planning to avoid label delays holding up garment finishing.

Main woven label: brand name and/or logo, sometimes size. Care and composition information usually goes on a separate care label. Mandatory for export: "Country of Origin" (Made in India, Made in China, etc.) is required by USA, EU, UK, Japan import regulations, can be woven into main label or added separately. Luxury brands add "Designed in [city]" or provenance statements. Some brands consolidate brand + care into one label to reduce sewing cost.
