What you're comparing.
GOTS and OEKO-TEX are the world's two most recognized textile certifications — essential for any Indian fashion brand targeting export markets, sustainable positioning, or premium domestic retail.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies the entire supply chain — from organic fiber farming through processing, manufacturing, and labeling. It ensures the fabric is organically produced AND ethically made. India is the world's largest producer of GOTS-certified textiles with 5,000+ certified facilities.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that the finished product is free from harmful chemicals — regardless of whether the raw material is organic or conventional. It tests for over 100 harmful substances (formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides, etc.). Over 20,000 companies worldwide are OEKO-TEX certified.

Our verdict.
Get GOTS if you are building an organic fashion brand, exporting organic textiles, or targeting the sustainability-premium market. GOTS is essential for any product labeled "organic."
Get OEKO-TEX if you want to assure chemical safety without committing to organic sourcing. It is faster, cheaper, and works for conventional fabrics. Most European retailers require OEKO-TEX as a minimum standard.
Best strategy: Get OEKO-TEX first (cheaper, faster) for immediate market access, then pursue GOTS when your organic supply chain is established. Many Indian exporters hold both certifications.
Why this matters for entrepreneurs.
Getting GOTS certified: Contact certification bodies in India: Control Union, OneCert, ECOCERT, or IMO. You need to trace organic cotton from farm to finished product. Easiest path: source from GOTS-certified mills in Tirupur, Kolhapur, or Ahmedabad — their certification covers your product.
Getting OEKO-TEX: Contact Hohenstein India (Gurugram) or Testex (Zurich-based, India office). Send fabric samples for testing. Results in 4–8 weeks. Simpler process than GOTS.
Business impact: GOTS certification adds 15–25% pricing premium in export markets. OEKO-TEX is now a minimum requirement for selling to EU retailers — without it, you can't even get on the shelf.
Tip: Many Indian brands display "OEKO-TEX Certified" on their website and hang tags — it builds instant trust with safety-conscious buyers, especially parents buying children's wear. This alone can increase conversion rates by 10–15%.
Frequently asked.
Not necessarily. GOTS includes chemical restrictions in its processing standards, so GOTS-certified products are inherently safe. However, some buyers/retailers specifically require OEKO-TEX certification. For organic brands: GOTS alone is sufficient. For non-organic brands: OEKO-TEX is the go-to. For maximum market access: hold both.
GOTS certification in India costs approximately ₹2–5 lakh for Year 1 (including application, audit, and transaction fees). Annual renewal costs ₹1–3 lakh. The cost varies by factory size, number of products, and certification body. Tip: If you're a small brand, avoid getting your own certification — instead, source from already-certified mills and use their GOTS transaction certificate.
OEKO-TEX is not legally mandatory, but it is practically required. Most major EU retailers (H&M, Zara/Inditex, Primark, C&A) require some form of chemical safety certification, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the most widely accepted. Without it, you will lose 70–80% of European buyer opportunities. The EU's REACH regulation also mandates chemical safety — OEKO-TEX helps demonstrate compliance.
